Ayurveda & Nutrition

Have you heard of Ayurveda? This incredible traditional knowledge from India is embedded into all the work that I do, Within my scope, I incorporate Ayurvedic knowledge into my offerings and hope to inspire those to learn more about it.

What is Ayurveda?

  •  "The science of life" sister science to yoga

  • Knowledge is from the Vedic texts

  • Yoga is a recommendation and a part of Ayurveda

  • 5000+ years old

  • Preventative health care system

  • Based on the individual person

  • Mind, body, spirit = balance within body

  • Food, herbs, spices, lifestyle changes (yoga, meditation, breathing, massage, routine, etc.)

  • Slow down, turn to wisdom, show unconditional love, follow intuition to be the best self

Ayurveda & Wellness

  • Views the individual as a whole person - client first, ailment second

  • Root of the problem vs. symptoms

  • Herbs, plants and natural remedies

  • In-depth analysis and interview to uncover client history, medication, lifestyle, mental health - looks at the body, mind and spirit

Elements & Doshas

In Ayurveda, everything is made up of five elements: space, air, fire, water and earth. Certain combinations of elements create “doshas” or life forces. These are “vata” (space and air), “pitta” (fire and water) and “kapha” (water and earth).

  • Ether: Expansion, imagination, vast,

  • Air: Movement, cold, fast, circulation, mobile, dry, light, weightless

  • Fire: Hot, sharp, penetrating, light, dry

  • Water: Cold, damp, liquid, heavy, moist, soft, dense

  • Earth: Solid, stable, heavy, dry, rough, dull

The elements and doshas are present in our bodies, environment and even time of day. Although everyone contains all of these elements, for many people, one or two of these doshas are more prevalent. Understanding the predominant dosha(s) you were born with, along with current dosha imbalances, and the dosha of the climate/day you’re in, can bring insight into the health concerns that have or may be more prone to developing. Using these elements and the doshas allows us to personalize nutrition, yoga and lifestyle recommendations that are meant for our individual and unique composition.

Why Ayurveda?

Although Ayurveda uses different words to describe our body than what many of us are used to, and is hard for Western medicine to “prove” it is a time-tested healthcare system which many have seen benefit from. What I find fascinating is how much Western medicine is starting to align with Ayurveda and other eastern modalities. For thousands of years Ayurveda has attributed digestive and intestinal health to our overall health, and concepts like mindfulness, mindful eating, food combining, circadian rhythm, and the importance of whole foods and a daily routine, have all already been heavily utilized within Ayurveda. The Western nutrition world is finally starting to catch up!

Ayurveda in Practice

It is helpful to work with someone trained in Ayurveda, or do an Ayurvedic training to learn more about the knowledge and how to incorporate it into your daily life.

Please note, when booking Ayurvedic sessions with any practitioner, it is important to note their qualifications and be wary of claims. Being an Ayurvedic doctor in India is a very high regard, and requires the completion of a 5.5 year university program. To cater to the Western world, many institutions offer “Ayurveda Therapist”, “Practitioner” and “Consultant” programs; however these are unregulated and vary in depth of information, cost, etc. What matters is the individual person’s experience and knowledge.

I am not an Ayurvedic doctor - I have done training in Ayurveda and it is embedded in my cultural traditions. Within my scope, I incorporate Ayurvedic knowledge into my offerings and hope to inspire those to learn more about it.
